Show that Sunday is a day of rest... for some

We assume it is Sunday. Note that Sunday is a day of rest. One exception: Oles in Budapest. Since it is indeed Sunday, many students headed out (too early) to check out mass at the famous St. Istvan’s Basilica (Budapest’s well-known Catholic basilica, supposedly housing the right hand of St. Istvan). If we had found out that the 9 am mass we were going to attend was cancelled, we would have slept until 10 am like most of the others in our group. So we wandered around Budapest on our way back to our living quarters only to find to our delight that class had not begun! Thus, we did not miss any class, as desired.

We piled into our temporary, make-shift classroom with our phenomenal pseudo-whiteboard. We braved proofs by contradiction, tackled the meaning of radicals and dominated a proof involving primes (which of course we all understood). Class ended with a delightful worksheet challenging our minds to the best of our abilities.

Now on to the best part… the Szchenyi Baths.

One word: hihetetlen (Hungarian for incredible – believed to be pronounced he-heh-teht-lehn).

The majority of our 24-member group took advantage of this opportunity to attempt to be a true Hungarian during our free afternoon. We traversed on the trams, mastered the metro, and foraged for food for lunch to reach our destination. It was awesome. We spent approximately 2.0571 hours enjoying the various amenities. Traditionally, a person starts off in the very hot steam pool (approximately 40 degrees Celsius) to relax. Then said person progresses to the cold pool (approximately 16-18 degrees Celsius), followed by the warm pool (approximately 27-30 degrees Celsius) which included a “spinny whirlpool thing.” Several of us braved the 80-100 degrees Celsius saunas which were definitely worth it. Trust us, after a long, exciting, high-energy week involving everything from lack of sleep to dietary changes to the theory of numbers to surviving the Hungarian language, we found this a perfect respite.

And of course, after our afternoon of complete relaxation, we ended our night (and the end of our first week!) with a bit of (trying) math homework.
